Tank Selection Guide
A guide to help you select the right tank for your application based on material, size, and chemical compatibility.
Selecting the right tank for your application requires careful consideration of several key factors. This guide covers the essentials to help you make an informed decision.
Material Compatibility The chemical being stored determines the tank material. Polyethylene, polypropylene, fiberglass, and stainless steel each have different resistance profiles. Always cross-reference your chemical against the Chemical Resistance Chart and confirm compatibility with fittings, gaskets, and process connections.
Capacity & Physical Dimensions Consider not only the volume you need to store but also the physical footprint. Vertical tanks save floor space; horizontal tanks offer a lower profile for transport or height-restricted areas. Account for thermal expansion and never fill beyond the manufacturer's recommended maximum.
Tank Configuration
- Flat Bottom — Standard for stationary installations on level pads
- Cone Bottom — Full drainage for batch processing, slurries, or viscous liquids
- Open Top — Mixing, batch processing, and applications requiring top access
- Horizontal — Transport, low-clearance installations, and gravity-feed systems
Certifications & Standards Depending on your application, you may need tanks that meet ASTM D1998, NSF 61 (potable water), or FDA CFR Title 21 (food contact). Specify these requirements upfront to ensure the correct resin and manufacturing process.
Environmental Conditions Outdoor installations require UV-stabilized materials. High-wind, seismic, or hurricane zones may require engineered tie-down and restraint systems. Freezing climates require insulation or heating considerations.
Secondary Containment Many jurisdictions require secondary containment for chemical storage. Tank Systems offers integrated containment solutions sized to your primary tank.
