What does a water softener do for my water quality?

Most of us have heard about hard water, varying in mineral content, hard water has several downsides to both your skin and plumbing as well as the plumbing in your home.

By definition hard water is water that contains appreciable amounts of suspended minerals, not necessarily visible to the eye.

These minerals drop out of suspension when heated and may also accumulate in all areas of your homes plumbing system, especially your hot water heater. Heating water accelerates the precipitation process.

Water softeners remove minerals by an ion exchange process. Ion exchange resins (complex sodium salt), they function as follows; as water flows over the resin bed's surface, the sodium is dissolved in the water, the released sodium ion acts on the suspended minerals creating a magnetic like influence on the minerals and causes them to begin to fall out of suspension (precipitate) onto the resin's surface. The periodic back flushing phase of the process releases and expels these accumulated minerals.

The above is a simple explanation and hits the high points of water softening ( mineral removal from your drinking water supply). Your skin will now last longer, look better, your plumbing will be less likely to accumulate mineral deposits. You will require less soap for all cleaning operations and your home cleaning chores will be reduced as water spotting, mineral rings in your pluming porcelain and mineral accumulations in your hot water heater will be a thing of the past.
